Why Wouldn’t You Have Credit Card Processing?

It was my absolute favorite bar. The clientele was good looking and smart and the bar staff was courteous and cool without that air of detached aloofness that can turn a “cool” bar into a miserable place. The bar had great bands on the weekend and during the week had excellent events like karaoke, open mic, and stand-up comedians. There was just one big stupid problem: they didn’t accept credit cards.

Why would this be so? Could they not measure the lost revenue? I for one remember no fewer than a dozen occasions where a new customer would walk in and ask if they took cards. The response “No” would send these formerly intrepid souls right back out the door. I wondered if business credit card processing was hard to set up or prohibitively expensive. I thought perhaps these greedy owners were trying to saddle us direct deposit receivers with the absurd $3 fee on the ATM in the establishment.

But soon I discovered what the problem was. One of the bartenders who I’d spent quite a bit of time talking to let me know that the bar was not filing taxes accurately and avoiding the credit card companies would require extra scrutiny. This all seemed extremely shady and in fact when I go to a business that doesn’t accept cards I always assume the worst now. Commercial equipment leasing of credit card machines is not that expensive I’ve discovered. If your company hasn’t done this I don’t know if I can completely trust you.
